Arnada — A heartfelt going-away party for Fit Sisters, a small downtown Vancouver gym for women on Broadway, was held Aug. 11. Fit Sisters was in business for five years but became a casualty of the sluggish economy. Its many fans bombarded The Columbian with glowing emails about their love of the place and its owner, Laura Bullock. They said Fit Sisters was a different kind of gym, a place of camaraderie and support with no mirrors and “no men!” It wasn’t just about losing weight, they said, but building community and self-esteem. Fit Sisters offered everything from kickboxing to belly dancing to a book club, pink workout machines and windows adorned with lace curtains. Bullock even waived sign-up fees for women who brought substantial donations for the YWCA Clark County. Bullock’s personal touch went as far as driving clients to doctor appointments and holding babies while moms worked out. “She was always there for anyone who needed anything,” said fan Pam Sullivan. Another fan, Leach Reitz, added, “We’ll sure miss the charming little, pink gym where we went to better ourselves and support each other.” Bullock said she’s heading for a new pastime as a Y-trained Court Appointed Special Advocate for children in the foster care system.
