Salmon Creek — What can a quarter get you these days? Students at Alki Middle School found out during a self-inspired fundraiser for the victims of the Japan earthquake.

While 25 cents doesn’t sound like much to many people, quarters can add up fast. During Spirit Week, the middle-school students raised more than $500 selling contact paper hearts for 25 cents each.

Julia Bradford-Latshaw, Mia Curtis, Alyssah Handly, Minranda Hannula and Katie Henke spent much of their own time (including during lunch) making posters, cutting out hearts and advertising for the cause. It became a contest to see which grade could sell the most, and the eighth-grade class won with 874 hearts purchased. The money will be sent to the Red Cross for Japanese relief.
