Fort Vancouver 31, Washougal 14

The Fort Vancouver Trappers can throw the ball. Oh, and they still know how to run, as well.

The Trappers gained 541 yards of offense in a 31-14 victory at Washougal.

Richard Vansiclen threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns, and the Trappers rushed for 318 yards.

“It was the best game from a quarterback I’ve had in 16 years,” Fort coach Cal Szueber said.

He prefers the double-wing offense, which can limit the passing game. This year, though, the Trappers have added a twist.

“We hit some deep passes tonight, even in the rain,” Szueber said. “They were packing the box, and we’re able to throw the ball this year. It worked out well.”

Washougal struck first, but the Trappers took a 12-7 lead at the half. The Panthers re-gained the lead early in the third quarter, but the Trappers would score the game’s final three touchdowns.

Jordan Vela rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Robert Bain added 117 yards on the ground. Robby Cayce caught three passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

Next up: Fort Vancouver (2-1) vs. Prairie at Kiggins Bowl; Washougal (2-1) at Clatskanie, Ore.
