Prep roundup: King’s Way Christian beats WSD in football

Josh Russell found a way to score on a run, a pass, and a punt return, leading King’s Way Christian to a 58-12 Class 1B victory over the Washington School for the Deaf.

King’s Way took a 24-0 lead after the first quarter and continued to roll.

Quarterbacks Jay Becker and David Veltkamp combined to pass for 199 yards and three touchdowns. Becker also had a rushing touchdown.

King’s Way improved to 5-1 in league play, 5-3 overall. King’s Way plays at Lyle next week in its final league game of the season.

Girls soccer

Hockinson 1, R.A. Long 0 — Kavita Battan scored the match’s lone goal on an assist from Aurora Bodenhamer as Hockinson won a share of the 2A GSHL title and earned the No. 1 seed to next week’s district playoffs.

Hockinson, which shared the league title with Washougal, will open the double-elimination 2A district tournament with a match Saturday against the No. 5 team from the Evergreen Conference at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Battle Ground’s District Stadium.

The Hawks will need to win two matches in the tournament to assure themselves a berth in the state tournament.

Washougal, which was idle Thursday, will open as the 2A GSHL’s No. 2 seed against the No. 3 seed from the Evergreen Conference on Saturday.

Prairie 1, Hudson’s Bay 0 — Chantal Paradis scored off an assist from Kindra Scobba, helping Prairie lock up the second place in the 3A GSHL.

With the win, the Falcons finished one point ahead of Columbia River. Prairie advances to play the No. 3 team from the Narrows League in a bi-district playoff match in Sumner on Nov. 6.

Columbia River 1, Mountain View 0 — Eden Behrens scored a second-half goal on an assist from Bri Brown, allowing the Chieftains to win and shoot past Kelso for third place in the 3A GSHL.

By finishing third, River will avoid the district playoff match and advance to the bi-district playoff on Nov. 6 in Sumner against an opponent to be determined.

Mountain View will play Kelso at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Doc Harris Stadium in Camas for the right to claim the district’s fourth berth to the bi-district playoffs.

Ridgefield 3, Castle Rock 0 — Courtney Potter, Lizzy Vance and Chelsey Boni each scored goals as the Spudders completed a 16-0 regular season. The Spudders have clinched a berth in the 1A state playoffs and will play Montesano next Thursday in Kalama for the district championship and seeding to state.

La Center 1, Toledo 0 — Stefanie Raley scored the lone goal as the Wildcats clinched second place in the Trico League.

La Center will play Tenino on Tuesday in Kalama for a berth to the 1A state playoffs.

Volleyball

Mark Morris 3, Woodland 1 — Mark Morris clinched second place and the No. 2 seed to next week’s 2A district tournament in Longview. Woodland will head to district as the No. 3 seed.

Class B — Seton Catholic and King’s Way Christian both won, as the two teams title for the Columbia Valley League title with 9-1 records.

Both teams advance to the district playoffs on Wednesday at Mountain View High. Seeding has not been determined.
