A 19-year-old Hazel Dell man was in critical condition at Southwest Washington Medical Center today after being shot in the throat.

Clark County sheriff’s deputies identified the victim as Daniel H. Thurston. He suffered a gunshot wound to the side of his neck.

The incident was reported at 8:51 p.m. at the Parklane Apartments, 10205 N.E. Notchlog Drive. Upon arriving deputies found Thurston lying on the ground unable to speak.

According to a news release, there were no eyewitnesses to the shooting. Residents reported hearing some type of verbal argument in the hallway just prior to hearing a single gunshot.

Upon investigation, residents found a male victim lying on the ground with blood spewing from a hole in his neck.

At 9:52 p.m., officers were asked to look for an older SUV that had been seen leaving Notchlog Drive in Hazel Dell. One person was said to be in the vehicle, a white male about 5 feet 5 inches tall.

Thurston is a longtime Hazel Dell resident who previously attended Columbia River High School as a member of the Class of 2010.
