East Vancouver, Cascade Park, Fisher’s Landing and Evergreen

Evergreen: Evergreen High School teacher Patti McMaster and the We the People students volunteered at the Pearson Air Museum on Oct. 19. The group assisted with crowd control and parking when Vice President Joe Biden visited Vancouver to campaign for Democratic U.S. Sen. Patty Murray. They were then able to meet and shake hands with the vice president.

Mountain View: Riley Crabtree’s composition “Toccata in Eb” won first place nationally in his age class in the 2010 National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Composers Composition Competition. Crabtree, a 2010 graduate of Mountain View High School, is the principal oboist for the Portland Youth Philharmonic. He has been writing music since age 9.

Countryside Woods: Derrick Knowles was nominated as the 2010 Vancouver Sparkle recipient by the Countryside Woods Neighborhood Association. Knowles lives near an entrance to the neighborhood and spruced up a forgotten entry sign with shrubs and plants.

Central Vancouver, Minnehaha and The Heights

Minnehaha: Air Force Tech. Sgt. Steven D. Williams is assigned to the 39th Air Base Wing in south-central Turkey. Williams is in charge of the weapons safety program at a base where pilots train. He is the son of Paula Williams, Vancouver.

Bagley Downs: Empower Up, a local computer education and reuse nonprofit, recently expanded the number of Internet access terminals in its public Internet cafe from six to 11. The cafe has nine Windows terminals, a Mac station and an Ubuntu Linux station available to access the World Wide Web. The cafe is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Internet access is free.

Central Park: The Clark County Realtors Foundation raised more than $14,000 at its fifth annual Foundation Follies on Oct. 7 at Clark College. Proceeds were donated to Northwest Children’s Outreach to supply local families with clothing, infant care, products, formula and other necessities.

Ogden: Cherry City Electric held its second annual Charity Golf Tournament on Oct. 4 at Royal Oaks Country Club. Around $14,000 was raised for the Southwest Washington Medical Center Foundation. Part of the funds raised will help provide heart screenings for student athletes.

Edgewood Park: The Vancouver Branch of American Association of University Women held a “Dollars for Scholars” bridge tournament on Oct. 23 at the Clark County Genealogy Center. The group netted $807 for their scholarship fund, which benefits women attending Clark College and Washington State University Vancouver. Ruth Harbaugh took first place, Mary Adkins was second and Retta Dykstra won third prize. Carol Brain and Ann Selk were co-chairwomen of the event. The women will have another tournament on April 16.

North Clark County and Woodland

Amboy: Amboy Middle School was named a Washington state “School of Distinction” for its five-year record of improvement in reading and math test scores. The award is given annually to the top 5 percent of the state’s schools as measured by improved test scores.

La Center: La Center High School student Madisen Moon recently created an elephant in her wood shop class.

Battle Ground, Meadow Glade and Hockinson

Battle Ground: Heather Giberson, Battle Ground, and Melissa Brown, Vancouver, won second place in the national 4-H Digital Storytelling project. The two 18-year-olds produced a seven-minute video that examines how music stimulates the brain and positively impacts academic and athletic performance. They had no previous experience in video production. Their video will be featured in the National Museum of Natural History in October. Giberson and Brown also received a $500 gift card to be used for future 4-H activities.

Hockinson: On Oct. 20, the Hockinson High School varsity soccer team worked at SHARE to support the backpack program. The team — 17 players, two volunteers and one coach — loaded backpacks and restocked food for the next session of loading backpacks. The backpack program provides children from low-income families at 42 schools with non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food to eat over the weekend.

Battle Ground: The North County Wildcats took first place in the Junior Pee Wee Novice division of the Southwest Washington Pop Warner Spirit Competition on Oct. 23. Several other Clark County squads fared well at the competition. The East County Jets from Camas/Washougal were unopposed in the Pee Wee Intermediate division and the Pee Wee Novice division. The Vancouver Warriors and Evergreen Bulldogs secured first place in the Junior Midget and Midget Novice divisions, respectively. All the teams will advance to the Regional competition in Santa Clara, Calif., on Nov. 26.

Hazel Dell, Felida and Salmon Creek

Felida: Drake Kemper, part-time Felida resident and former Skyview High School student, appeared on the first five minutes of “Law and Order Los Angeles” on Oct. 16. The episode, titled “Harbor City,” is available to watch on www.nbc.com/Law_and_Order/. More info on Kemper’s acting roles is available at drakekemper.com.

West Hazel Dell: The Hazel Dell/ Salmon Creek Business Association and Clark County Fire District 6 invited 10 elementary schoolchildren to Fire Station 61 on Oct. 31. The kids were finalists from a yearly poster contest. This year’s theme was “Smoke Alarms — A Sound You Can Live With.” Each of the ten received a shirt with a picture of their poster on it.

North Salmon Creek: The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra received another donation to help support the student concert program. This check, for $2,500, was given to the symphony by U.S. Bank. “Increasing access to the arts, especially for our young people, is a top priority for us in our community giving,” Dan Pagano, U.S. Bank spokesman, said in a release. “We’re delighted to be able to support the Vancouver Symphony in their outreach to students in our local schools.”

Orchards, Sifton and Brush Prairie

Maple Tree: Around 35 people attended the grand opening ceremony for the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 4 location at 9707 N.E. 54th St. on Oct. 22. Sen. Craig Pridemore, D-Vancouver, and Vancouver City Councilor Larry Smith made a presentation, the Vancouver Fire Department provided free blood pressure checks and DAV Chapter 4 provided free coffee, hot dogs, sodas and cake. The new location will give service officers a place to meet with veterans from all military branches. The office phone number is 360-713-6004.

East Clark County: Camas and Washougal

Camas: On Saturday, Oct. 9, volunteers from the Camas-Washougal Rotary Cub donned work gloves and used power tools to help clean up a Camas senior citizen’s yard. The house was almost completely overgrown with shrubbery and weeds. More than 20 Rotarians and family members helped with the project.
