Tax bump, sales slump could put lights out at Vancouver’s Kiggins Theater

Operators of the Kiggins Theater say the historic downtown Vancouver venue is losing money and could close by the end of the month, due to a ticket sales slump and an increase in sales tax on soda and candy that takes effect June 1.

“We’re not making the money to be able to pay our employees and do what we need to do,” said Matthew West, one of two managers working for Vancouver-based Historic Movie Theater Corp., which operates the 500-seat theater. Named for J.P. Kiggins, who served as mayor of Vancouver in the 1920s, the single-screen venue has operated at 1011 Main St. since 1936.
