I was a college student at the time home for summer break in Portland. I remember all the ash and how it fell like snow. It was crazy.
My fiance, LeRoy Hancuff, had a business in Cougar at the time, and he was the one who set up the familiar sign along the highway that we see in pictures that said “Mount St. Helens is alive and well.”
I found it a few days ago in a small local paper commemorating the 30th anniversary.
