Volcano center plans open house

The Columbian
Published: May 1, 2010, 12:00am

Thirty years ago, when Mount St. Helens awakened, the U.S. Geological Survey set up shop in Vancouver.

The David A. Johnston Cascades Volcano Observatory will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 8. The center, named for the geologist killed in the eruption of May 18, 1980, is located in the Columbia Tech Center business park at 1300 S.E. Cardinal Court.

A free 30th anniversary poster of Mount St. Helens will be available, along with opportunities to have your photo taken to appear as if you are in the volcano’s crater, explore displays and monitoring equipment, see hazards information and view volcano videos. You can also bring your own mystery rock and have it identified.
