Six-hundred people said, “Aloha,” to spring by visiting two luaus at Thomas Jefferson Middle School on March 6.

Guests were served an authentic Hawaiian meal featuring dishes such as kalua pork, chicken long rice, lomi lomi salmon, sticky rice, macaroni salad and coconut-flavored haupia for dessert.

The real treat was served after the food — in the form of a show that included dancers, musicians, singers, chanters, conch blowers and drummers of all ages performing Hawaiian hulas, Tahitian dances, Tongan drumming and the traditional haka dance of the Maori from New Zealand.

The event was organized by the Ke Kukui Foundation and the Kaleinani o ke Kukui Hawaiian Culture School. Proceeds from the luaus will help support the Ho’ike and Hawaiian Festival on the last Saturday of July at Esther Short Park.

Miguel Mesa Photography was kind enough to send in photos of the event.
