WASHINGTON, D.C. — A federally funded summer jobs program may not continue this year, according to a report issued by U.S. Sen. Patty Murray’s office.

Murray had proposed extending the program through 2010. The amendment was voted down Tuesday by a majority of Republican votes in the Senate.

Last summer, the program employed about 300,000 teens and young adults with $1.2 billion in stimulus funding. About 700 young workers in Southwest Washington received work through the program in 2009, supported here by a $2.7 million share of the federal funding. Murray, D-Wash., expects to continue her efforts to include the funding in the final bill.
