Boone, a 7-year-old golden retriever-chow mix, came to us because his family could no longer care for him. The staff gave him a haircut because his fur had been matted. He has lived with kids and other dogs, but would not do well in a house with cats or kids younger than 10 years old.

Biggie came to us when his family could no longer take care of him. He would not do well with other cats, but dogs and children would be OK. Biggie sometimes thinks he is a small dog by his size — he is a big 31 pounds, maybe that is why he gets along with dogs so well.

These pets are among those available for adoption from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Humane Society for Southwest Washington, 1100 N.E. 192nd Ave., Vancouver. Fees — which can include registered microchip, health exam, a spay or neuter certificate and vaccination — vary. Call 360-693-4746.
