The view in 1938

I never lived in the Vancouver Barracks, but when I was seven we lived on East Reserve Street for a year. It was 1938.

The house is still there near the top of the hill. From the wide front porch I used to watch the soldiers training in the woods (where Clark College is today) with their mules. Now and then one of the young soldiers would see me watching and seemed embarrassed.

Years later, my husband helped dismantle one of the mule barns, bringing a mule shoe home. I still have it.

Shirlee Evans lives in Clark County.
