The city of Vancouver will pay tribute to tree leader Gordon MacWilliams, and honor his widow, Sylvia, at a ceremony on Feb. 18.

MacWilliams, who died last October at age 67, led the city’s effort to protect trees and educate the public about their health. He was a member of the Urban Forestry Commission who “devoted a lot of his time to protecting and preserving trees. Sylvia strongly supported Gordon’s love of trees and helped him along the way,” according to a statement from the city.

At 11 a.m. Feb. 18, at the corner of Southwest 13th and Main streets, urban forestry commissioners and the MacWIlliams family and friends will present Sylvia with the Silva Bolds-Whitefield Urban Forestry Award. Their names and the label “tree heroes” will be etched into stone there.

The ceremony is open to the public.
