SEATTLE (AP) — Mariners closer David Aardsma will have surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip, but the team expects him to be ready for the start of the regular season.
The Mariners said Thursday that Aardsma will have surgery next Monday in Vail, Colo. Dr. Marc Phillipon will perform the operation.
Aardsma is expected to resume throwing in about four weeks. Seattle reports for spring training in the middle of February.
Aardsma has been bothered by the hip since the end of the 2010 season and after consulting with trainers and doctors, the decision was made to have the surgery.
Aardsma recorded 31 saves in the 2010 season after saving 38 games a year earlier. His 69 career saves ranks fourth in team history.
