Waiting for the ash to fall

I was 9 years old when the Mount St. Helens eruption happened.

I lived in Moses Lake. It was on a Sunday afternoon when we got a report of a volcano erupting in Washington. My friend’s mom said I should head home.

When I got home, I told my mom, and she woke my father up and said, “Where are the girls?” They were at church. My brother went to get them.

We watched as reports came in. In a few hours, we saw ash fall from the sky. The next day, we spent hours cleaning rooftops.

I will never forget that day. It will be with me forever.
