On the safe side of the mountain

Received March 31

Some friends and I spent the previous day boating and skiing at Lake Merwin. We spent the night at the Camper’s Hideway on the lake’s south ridge.

The morning was very odd. It appeared overcast, but different. The clouds had weird lightning like charges going through them. We didn’t know what was happening.

It wasn’t until about noon when we were on our way back to Vancouver that we saw what was happening. About Battle Ground, when we cleared the forest growth, we looked back at St. Helens and we were shocked. We pulled over and just stood beside the car and watched.

We were certainly fortunate the blast went to the northeast rather than south.
