Flyers bring down the hammer on Schultz

Talk about a fitting, sitting tribute.

The Philadelphia Flyers did it up right when they honored Dave “The Hammer” Schultz — he of the NHL-record 472 penalty minutes in 1974-75 — during a game this month.

“At the conclusion of his acceptance speech,” wrote Anthony Sanfilippo of the Trentonian in New Jersey, “the Flyers’ public-address announcer called Schultz for two minutes for roughing, five for fighting and a 10-minute misconduct and sent him to the penalty box, where he watched his hall of fame banner rise to the roof of the Wachovia Center.”

Not worth repeating

The San Diego Chargers’ coach says he’s willing to offer star running back and father-to-be LaDainian Tomlinson some baby-name suggestions, with one exception.

“Not mine,” Norval Eugene Turner told the Associated Press. “I’m still mad at my mom about that.”

Vroom service

A Seattle sporting staple — unlimited hydroplane racing — has been exported overseas for the first time, with the fleet racing in Doha, Qatar, this weekend.

This just in: The Somali pirates have captured Heat 1B.

A game of one-liners

Tuesday morning came awful early for the basketball teams of Monmouth and Saint Peter’s. They tipped off at 6 a.m. in New Jersey for a live ESPN college basketball audience.

It also produced some fine quotes from the participants:

n “I’ve always heard jokes about my name, but I never heard them this early,” said the appropriately named Ryan Bacon after scoring the first basket for Saint Peter’s on its way to a 58-34 victory.

n From Saint Peter’s coach John Dunne: “Every alarm in the house went off at 3 a.m. My wife wasn’t too happy.”

n From Monmouth coach Dave Calloway: “I got up at 2 a.m. I can honestly say I have gotten in at that time a lot more than I have woke up.”
