Francisco Bueno was hired as the executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Washington. The nonprofit organization, which offers affordable after-school and summer programs for children, has eight clubs in Vancouver and administrative offices at 1111 Main St., Suite 605. Bueno previously worked in a number of roles at the organization, including assistant club director and manager of mentoring services and outcomes. He left the Boys & Girls Clubs in 2013 when he was hired as program director at College Possible in Portland. Bueno received a bachelor’s degree from Claremont McKenna College and a master’s degree in nonprofit administration from University of Notre Dame. He is replacing Elise Menashe, who is retiring after 16 years in the position. He starts on Oct. 8. Learn more at mybgc.org.

Several Clark County breweries took home medals following competition at the annual Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colo., last month. Camas brewery and restaurant Grains of Wrath Brewing, 230 N.E. Fifth Ave., took home a bronze medal for its Vienna-style lager; 54?40′ Brewing Company, 3801 S. Truman Road, Suite 1, Washougal, took silver for its German-style K?lsch called Kascadia; and Loowit Brewing Company, 507 Columbia St., took bronze for its imperial stout called Shimmergloom. According to its website, the festival was founded in 1982 and “represents the largest collection of U.S. beer ever served.” Winners were selected by an international panel of 293 judges out of 8,496 entries and 2,404 breweries, according to a news release.

The Columbian recently hired and promoted several employees within the company.

Allan Brettman started at The Columbian on Sept. 10 as its business editor. In the position, he’ll manage the paper’s coverage of business, including real estate, high tech, agriculture, retail and manufacturing. Previously, he was employed as a reporter at The Oregonian, and as a news editor and reporter for The Daily News of Longview. Before that, he was a reporter for The Commercial Appeal of Memphis, Tenn., where one of his areas of responsibility included covering Elvis Presley Enterprises. He also has taught journalism and technical writing classes at Washington State University Vancouver. He graduated from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Anthony Macuk was hired as The Columbian’s business reporter, replacing Troy Brynelson. He will cover Vancouver-area business news, particularly real estate and development. Monika Spykerman was hired as the features assistant at The Columbian, replacing Wyatt Stayner. Previously, she was an editor of the North Bank Now website. The daughter of political cartoonist and fine artist Monte Wolverton, Spykerman occasionally sells her own multimedia artworks through local galleries or by commission.
