Prep notes: Woodland’s Hanley retires from coaching
Wednesday, July 02, 2008 By Paul ValenciaColumbian Staff Writer Richard Hanley, a longtime basketball coach who led Stevenson for 12 seasons and Woodland for six, announced his retirement.
“The coaching profession is a very demanding and time-consuming profession no matter what sport you are associated with,” he wrote in an e-mail to The Columbian. “You are literally planning, coaching, or organizing something 12 months out of the year.”
He coached his son, Marcus, this past season during Marcus’ senior year. His younger son, Robert, is going into the seventh grade. Hanley said it was a “good time for a break (from coaching)” to focus more on spending time with Robert.
Hanley took the job at Woodland for the 2000-01 season and led the Beavers to two district tournament title games, winning in 2001. After four seasons, he became the junior varsity coach to spend more time with Marcus, then took over again as the varsity coach at Woodland the past two seasons.
Stevenson made 12 postseason appearances in Hanley’s 14 seasons, including two league championships and one district title.
He coached Darren Morningstar, the state’s leading scorer in 1988. Morningstar went on to a professional career, playing for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and well as seasons in Europe and South America.
Hanley, who compiled a 228-196 record, said he still plans to be a part of the game. In fact, he has helped out with basketball clinics this summer. He also will remain on staff as a teacher at Woodland.
