High schools: State shares the wealth of spring finals
Monday, May 19, 2008 By Tim Martinez Columbian Staff WriterIt wasn’t too long ago that high school spring sports championships were contested in a thing called Springfest.
In Springfest, a city in the state served as the host for just about every spring championship in a single classification.
In 1999, Vancouver served as the host city for the 4A Springfest.
But Springfest was discontinued about eight years ago, and now the championships in the different sports are spread out around the state.
And this season, the WIAA has never has a more diverse set of locations as just about every corner of the state is hosting a state championship this week.
Beginning Tuesday, the boys and girls golf state championships will be held around golf courses in the Bellingham area, covering the Northwest portion of the state.
The trend continues over the weekend with championships in Seattle (4A and 3A baseball and 2A tennis), the Tacoma area (2A track and field, 4A and 3A softball and all boys soccer), the Yakima area (2A, 1A, 1B and 2B baseball, 2A, 1B and 2B softball, 1A, 1B and 2B tennis), the Spokane area (1A softball, 1B and 2B track and field), the Tri-Cities (4A, 3A track and field, 3A tennis) and last but not least of all Vancouver (4A tennis).
Here’s how this week’s schedule looks for local athletes:
GOLF: Gaston De La Torre and the Hockinson boys golf team will go after another set of the 2A championships at the Loomis Trail Golf Course in Blaine, while the Hockinson girls will play at Homestead Golf Course in Lynden on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Class 4A golfers will play at Avalon Golf Course in Burlington (boys) and Sudden Valley Golf Course in Bellingham. The 3A golfers will play at Bellingham Country Club (boys) and Skuksan Golf Club in Bellingham (girls).
The 1A boys and girls will play at North Bellingham Golf Course.
BOYS SOCCER: For the third consecutive season, the Camas boys soccer team finds itself in the state semifinals. At 3 p.m. Friday, the Papermakers will play Lakeside of Seattle — the school Camas beat in the 3A title game in 2006 — in the second of the 3A semifinals at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood. If Camas wins, the Papermakers will play Mercer Island or Kennedy of Burien in the championship game at 5 p.m. Saturday.
SOFTBALL: In a rare twist, Clark County only has two softball teams left playing at the state tournaments.
Mountain View opens the 4A state tournament at the South End Recreation Area in Tacoma with a first-round game against Eastlake of Sammamish at 9 a.m. Friday. The Thunder hope to make a return visit to the state title game, which will be played at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
La Center will open the 1A state tournament at Franklin Fields in Spokane against Connell at 10 a.m. Friday.
TRACK AND FIELD: Class 4A and 3A athletes return to Edgar Brown Stadium in Pasco for the state championship meet on Friday and Saturday, while 2A and 1A athletes will compete at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. Class 2B athletes return to Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
TENNIS: The Vancouver Tennis Center again will host the 4A state championships as Prairie’s Spencer Nevin takes aim at a state championship in his own backyard.
Union’s Christina Le and Fort Vancouver’s Derek Cooley are among the favorites at the 3A state championship Kamiakin High School and Tri-City Court Club in Kennewick. The 2A state championship will be at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.
