The Clark College men's soccer team advanced to next weekend's NWAACC Final Four with a 1-0 quarterfinal win over Walla Walla on Saturday in Vancouver.Walla Walla's team featured the top-two NWAACC goal scorers, but the Penguins held them in check.
"It really took a team effort to stop their attack," Clark coach Biniam Afenegus said.
Dylan Crowely scored on a fastbreak in the 15th minute off an assist from Hudson's Bay grad Aaron Jackson.
"We scored first and we didn't just pack it in the bag," Afenegus said.
Sean Ervin preserved the shutout in goal for Clark (16-1-3), the South Division champion.
Clark, which was coming off a first-round bye in the playoffs, advances to play North Division champion Whatcom (11-3-6) at 2 p.m. Nov. 17 in the NWAACC semifinals at the Starfire Complex in Tukwila.
Whatcom of Bellingham survived a 7-6 penalty kick shootout with Highline on Saturday after playing to a scoreless draw.
The championship match is set for Nov. 18 at Tukwila.
Clark women lose quarterfinal on penalty kicks - Highline held off the Penguins at Des Moines, 4-3 on penalty kicks after the teams played to a 1-1 draw in their quarterfinal playoff match.
Kelsey Smith scored off an assist from Katie Carothers with six minutes remaining in regulation.
Clark finishes its season 12-5-4.
Spokane sweeps cross country championships - Runners from Spokane found Lewisville Park in Battle Ground to their liking, winning the NWAACC men's and women's cross country team titles as well as having individual champions in both races.
The Spokane women defended their title from last year, while it was the seventh consecutive title for the Spokane men.
Favorites Dak Riek and Mark Moeller went 1-2 for the Sasquatch. Riek covered the 5,000-meter course in 25 minutes, 4 seconds. Moeller finished in 25:10.
Clark, which finished eighth out of 10 in the team standings, was led by Matt Smith, who placed 23rd (27:42). Nick Smith was second in for the Penguins, placing 35th (28:19).
Also for Clark, Craig Kochis was 43rd (28:48), Josh Loewen was 46th (29:07), Jesse McChesney 57th (30:11), and Kenny Davis 61st (31:53).
Spokane's Brittnee Sanchez, who won the NWAACC preview at Clark on Oct. 6, came back to win the big race on Saturday, covering the course in 19:09.
Leah Twombly of Lane was second in 19:27.
Clark, which placed seventh out of 10 teams, was led by Jodi Moss, who was 25th overall in 21:17.
Also for the Penguins, Taylor DeJong was 32nd (21:47), Samantha Gonzalez was 39th (22:35), Amanda Meadows was 49th (23:56), and Alisa Moore was 58th (25:26).
