The Cold Springs fire continues to smoke and smolder as crews reinforce fire lines and do mop-up work.

The fire, about 11 miles northeast of the Klickitat County hamlet of Trout Lake, was reported July 12. It was blamed on a lightning strike. It had burned 7,956 acres as of 5 p.m. Friday.

While the fire remains active, the following Gifford Pinchot National Forest and state campgrounds are closed: Cold Springs, Morrison, Bird Creek, Mt. Adams, Horse Camp, Mirror Lake, Bird Lake, Bench and Island.

Also closed are forest roads 80, 82, and 8040 east of Road 23 at the forest boundary. Trail closures are Stagman Ridge, Salt Creek, Buck Creek, Cold Springs (south climb), Crofton Ridge, Morrison and Snipes Mountain.

Summer activities in Trout Lake are continuing as planned.

As of Friday afternoon the fire was 50 percent contained. One mile of fire line remained to be built, but the fire was smoldering with low-intensity surface fires. More than 1,000 firefighters are on the scene. Three injuries, apparently all minor, have been reported.
