Washougal standoff ends in man's arrest
Friday, July 18, 2008 By LAURA McVICKER, Columbian staff writerA Washougal man involved in a standoff with police Wednesday night allegedly set his trailer on fire and fled. But a police tracking dog ended the pursuit by biting him.
David Peck, 45, was transported to Southwest Washington Medical Center with bite injuries. He was treated and then placed into custody at the Clark County Jail on suspicion of an assault and charges related to the standoff.
Washougal police officers were looking for Peck on Wednesday evening after receiving a complaint that he had assaulted another man at a home in town, said Sgt. Ron Mitchell. Officers interviewed the victim and then went to Peck’s trailer at 2155 N. T St. to interview him. Mitchell said Peck refused to answer the door or come outside.
“He made statements that they better not come in,” Mitchell said.
Officers prepared to leave when they noticed a flicker of flames inside. Then, Peck fled out the back door. Officers chased Peck, but he didn’t surrender. They then deployed their police dogs — one of which bit Peck in an effort to capture him.
Fire and smoke was coming from the windows of the trailer as Washougal firefighters arrived to battle the blaze. A damage estimate wasn’t available, and Mitchell couldn’t say how police believe the trailer was set on fire.
Peck is likely be charged with reckless burning instead of arson since the damage was done to his own property, Mitchell said. |
