Weather Eye: Cooler temperatures lead to start of rainy season

It is no surprise that we are heading toward the end of the month. And have you noticed our afternoon temperatures? Slowly out of the 70s and into the 60s. Low 60s even under sunny skies yesterday afternoon. How many of you have so far turned the heat on in your house?

Lately, the days with highs in the 70s cool off quickly after sunset, resulting in lows in the 30s. Makes for a chill in the house. I’ve turned the heat on a couple of times. As we slip into days with highs in the 40s and 50s, I am looking forward to a fire in the gas stove, cozy in my recliner, dogs on my lap.

November is only about a week away, and we most likely will be into the rainy season. We need the moisture and snow in the mountains. Our rain in Vancouver so far this month is 1.25 inches below average. And with maybe one-tenth of an inch of rain later today and tonight, and maybe one-quarter to one-half inch Thursday, we would still be below normal.

Checking the average mean temperature in Vancouver so far this month, can you believe it is exactly at normal? It is 55.2 degrees. We had above average highs the past two weeks but also below average overnight lows so that struck out any gain there. The highest temperature was 77 degrees on Oct. 16 and the low was 35 degrees Oct. 15.

With talks of El Nino and the ‘blob’ of warm water in the Gulf of Alaska, it should make for interesting winter weather predictions, I’m sure. The Oregon Chapter of the American Meteorology Society will host the annual winter weather conference at OMSI beginning at 10 am Saturday. Try to make it. Admission is free to the conference center.

And so it goes, showers later today, fair Wednesday, rainy and breezy Thursday, drying Friday and Saturday. Rain Sunday, drying Monday. The on again off again weather is upon us.
