Union girls wrestling spoiled the party on Saturday.

The Titans scored 163.5 points to win the Clark County Championships, and more notably became the first girls team not named Washougal to do so.

The Panthers, who have won the tournament seven years in a row, finished in second place with 147 points.

Six Union girls wrestlers made the final match. Five of them won.

“Pretty awesome,” Union girls coach John Godinho said. “The girls are awesome.”

Freshman Kayla Brosius defeated Trinity Lien of Kelso to claim first, Izzy Morales (125) pinned Kelso’s Clyree Sams in 1:50, Annebelle Helm (155) defeated Fort Vancouver’s Katelyn Cera on a 3-1 decision, Riley Aamold (130) bested Washougal’s Jaden Robb in a 17-0 technical fault and Krista Warren beat Washougal’s Ashley Garrison in a 10-0 decision to complete Union’s winning performance.

After the trophy ceremony, as teams were packing up to leave, the announcer dubbed Union the winner and the Titans erupted in celebration.

Five Washougal girls made the finals, but all five finished second.

“We came in with our game plan,” Washougal girls coach Heather Carver said. “Came in with our horses. We felt we set the table, we came in knowing we couldn’t just show up and be happy to be here, we had to wrestle. And we did that. But we couldn’t finish. We kept it close.”

Kelso scored 119 points and finished in third out of 17 teams from Southwest Washington.

Brosius, whose brother Kyle Brosius, a sophomore at Union, won on the boys side, wasn’t sure what to expect from the event.

“I was nervous, I’d never wrestled her before,” she said. “I came in and really wanted to get to the finals, do it for my team. So I came in and wanted to have some fun. I was so happy representing my school.”

Mountain View’s Abbie Huft (100) pinned Lanae Garcia of Kelso in 1:18 to represent as the Thunder’s lone winner on Saturday.

“I thought about winning for my friend Daniel who committed suicide last year,” Huft, a first time winner in her third year wrestling in the event, said. “I knew I wanted to do it for him. It felt amazing. I started crying, was full of emotions, and especially because it’s my senior year. I couldn’t handle it.”

Other Clark County champions included Hikaru Abe (105), Cece Saylor, and Mariana Juarez-Trejo (190) of Skyview, Kyle Shoddy of Kelso (120), Lizzy Kinnan of Battle Ground (135), Allison Blaine of Hudson’s Bay (140) and Samantha Flannely of Camas (235). Also, Eliana Duff of Fort Vancouver (110) repeated at county champion.
