Two Portland police officers were injured early Saturday on Interstate 5 at Jantzen Beach.

According to a police news release, at 12:46 a.m. officers were called to the northbound lanes of the freeway, just south of the bridge, after witnesses reported a possible drunk driver blocking the right lane with a vehicle.

Police arrived and arrested the driver. While awaiting a tow truck, another driver crashed into one of the police cars. An officer inside the police car and a sergeant standing outside the car were injured.

Both police officers suffered what the news release described as serious but not life-threatening injuries and were taken to a Portland hospital. The sergeant has been released from the hospital and the officer is expected to be released later today.

Ken Thomas Neely, 53, was identified as the driver who crashed into the patrol car. Neely was not injured. He was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on third-degree assault, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and driving under the influence of intoxicants.

The unidentified driver involved in the initial accident and a third driver who nearly hit another officer were both charged with driving under the influence.

Interstate 5 northbound was closed while investigators worked. It was open Saturday morning.
