First responders retrieved a body Friday evening from the Columbia River near the 1800 block of Southeast Columbia River Drive in Vancouver.

Someone walking along the waterfront spotted the body washed up against the rocks and called 911 about 5:52 p.m., according to Vancouver police Officer Eric McCaleb. The Vancouver fire and police departments responded and located the body in the area.

The Vancouver Fire Department, assisted by the Multnomah County, Ore., Sheriff’s Office, launched a fire boat to retrieve the body, McCaleb said.

It appeared the body had been in the water for a while and was unidentifiable, he said.

The body was taken to Marine Park and turned over to the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office, which will make the identification and determine the cause and manner of death.

The Vancouver Police Department will continue to investigate if it is determined a crime occurred, McCaleb said.
