In 1945, planeloads of wounded World War II solders flew into Honolulu from the battlefields of the Pacific, on their way home. Many were on floor mats on B-24 bombers. All were in pain, but most of them were happy that they now had hope of “seeing my mother before I die.” All regretted their loss of limbs and severe injuries, but they were proud that their sacrifice was made for their fellow soldiers, their flag, and their country. I saw them weep when they heard the refrain of the national anthem.
For months, it was my duty and an honor to treat their wounds, then send them on to hospitals for recovery and reunite them with their loving families.
Last Sunday I was proud when Vice President Mike Pence walked out of a football game, with support from President Donald Trump. Pence wrote, “I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our flag, or our national anthem.”
During World War II, soldiers received minimum wages and faced dangers and death for serving our country. Shame on the athletes who make fabulous salaries today, yet refuse to honor our nation.
We should thank God for these two patriots — Trump and Pence — and the principles for which they stand.
