Letter: Trump might be beneficial, after all

The Democrats were happy to have now-President Trump as their rival candidate. They thought he would scare people to the left. They didn’t realize how scary the left had become in many people’s eyes.

Now they are happy to have him as president because now that he has power, his scariness has reached new heights. His over-the-top reaction to immigration, his dismantling of the EPA, his inhumane approach to health care, his irrational public communication in the form of egotistic non-fact ramblings, throw in the Russian connection, and you have a cocktail undrinkable by all but a few billionaires, people stuck in the past, and macho anti-government survivalists.

He is forcing Republicans to move to the center (example: the March 16 Columbian article “Republicans break rank with pledge to fight climate change”) and a growing number of Democrats who are now more willing to compromise. Is this the rebuilding of a populous center, one that is far more capable of honest and fair governing? I hope so. Thanks, Donald.
