Led by regional champions Ethan Rotondo, JJ Talavera and Tommy Strassenberg, the Union boys wrestling team placed second in the Class 4A Region 4 meet in Hanford on Saturday.
Mead of Spokane took the team title with 301.5 points, easily outpacing the Titans’ 223.5. Camas placed fifth at 155.
Rotundo, a defending state champion, won the 120-pound division by beating Terrell Sanders of University 5-1. Talavera beat teammate Danny Sneakier 11-6 to win the 145-pound division title. Strassenberg beat Greater St. Helens League rival Izaiah Duran of Battle Ground 3-0 to win the 152-pound division title.
There were eight regional titles from GSHL schools on Saturday. Joining the Union wrestling on the top podium in Hanford were Rylan Thompson of Camas (132 pounds), James Rogers of Battle Ground (160), Jackson McKinney of Skyview (182), Dylan Ingram of Camas (220) and Kevin Kruse of Skyview (285).
CLASS 3A: Dylan Goodpaster of Evergreen and Bryan Person of Prairie took home regional championships at the 3A Region 3 meet at Juanita High School in Kirkland.
Goodpaster beat 3A GSHL rival Zach Threlfall of Kelso 8-0 to win the 170-pound division title.
Person scored an exciting 7-6 win over Ricky Victoriano of Kelso to capture the 220-pound crown.
Eli Dickerson of Mountain View (132), Kenny Ford of Prairie (145), Angel Castillo of Hudson’s Bay (160) and Alton Culver of Mountain View (182) were regional runners-up.
CLASS 1A: Four local wrestlers garnered regional titles at the 1A regional in Royal City on Saturday.
Jeffrey Mayolo of La Center scored a 14-1 major decision over Chris Millward of Castle Rock to win the 152-pound division.
Stevenson had a pair of regional champions. Cody Miller beat Rodrigo Ozuna of Warden 21-12 to win the 132-title. Jesse Hoffberger beat Jekoby Tuttle of Connell with a pin to win the 160-pound division.
King’s Way Christian’s Mike Garrison earned a 7-4 win over Devin Roberts of Riverview to capture the 195-pound division.
Other winners included James Bell (145) and Alex Medina (220) of Columbia-White Salmon. Robel Grove of La Center was the runner-up at 113 pounds.
GIRLS: Clark County and Southwest Washington will be well represented at state as eight local wrestlers earned titles at the girls regional tournament in Aberdeen.
The highlight of the day was a 135 pounds where Marissa Montano pinned Sydney Burres of Camas in the lone all-Clark County final.
Ashlyn Daugherty of Woodland beat Faith Cardenas of Aberdeen 17-6 to win the 100-pound division. Hikaru Abe of Skyview earned an 8-4 win over Bianca Lopez of Hoquiam at 105 pounds.
Lacy Dunlop of Camas won the 115-pound title with a pin against Cristy Langdon of Castle Rock. Sierra Joner of Battle Ground pinned Mercedes Pinnell of Hoquiam to win at 120 pounds.
Allison Blaine of Hudson’s Bay beat McKenna Speed of Kalama to win the 130-pound title. At 145 pounds, Morgan Ratcliff was the champion with a pin of Sidnee Arcury of Centralia.
And Abby Lees of Washougal continued her stellar prep career with a pin of Natasha Fruh of North Beach to claim the 235-pound division.
Earning regional runner-up finishes were Eliana Duff of Fort Vancouver (110), Jaden Robb of Washougal (125), Brooklyn Wurm-Wurtz of Washougal (155) and Jennessee Sayler of Skyview (170).
