Woodland withstood a hot-shooting start by Black Hills with a balanced attack in the first round of the 2A district tournament.

Woodland will face R.A. Long on Tuesday in the semifinals with the winner earning a state berth.

R.A. Long hit its first five 3-point attempts and finished 7 of 9 in the first half as Woodland took a 29-24 lead at the intermission.

“We made a slight adjustment at halftime, and it paid off as they only had five points in the third quarter,” Woodland coach Andrew Johnson said. “Wyatt Harsh did a nice job, but it was overall good team effort on defense.”

Palmer Dinehart led the scoring with 18 points, Bryce Mulder had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Tanner Sixberry added 13 points and eight rebounds.

Tyler Flanagan added 11 assists and did not commit a turnover from the point.

“It was an overall good night from everybody,” Johnson said.

Johnson said he sees good and bad in playing R.A. Long for a third time this season.

“It’s good because we know them,” he said. “It’s not good because it’s hard to beat a team three times in the season, especially with how R.A. Long was hot toward the end. … We know it’s going to be a battle on Valentine’s Day.”
