Letter: Electoral College is necessary

By Laura Jackson, VANCOUVER
Published: August 9, 2017, 6:00am

In his Aug. 3 letter, “End the Electoral College,” Jordan Yettick said, “The system is not meant to address the needs of small states. …” On the contrary, less populous states were exactly why the Electoral College was instituted.

Those founding fathers from smaller states wanted to be sure their votes would count. One person, one vote sounds good. It did to me, too, until my wise sister pointed out the large metropolitan areas (Seattle, Los Angeles, New York, etc.) would decide all elections.

We in small towns, small states and rural areas could just pack up our votes and go home without the Electoral College.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
