COOS BAY, Ore. — A renewable energy project that proposed installing wind turbines 15 miles off the Oregon coast appears to have stalled.
Oregon Public Broadcasting reported that the federal Bureau of Ocean Management is no longer processing Principle Power’s lease application, at the company’s request. The bureau says the lease application has not formally been withdrawn.
In 2013, Principle Power proposed the first offshore wind project on the West Coast in federal waters about 15 miles from Coos Bay. The project would have 30 megawatts of power from five floating turbine generators anchored about 1,400 feet deep.
Last year, the Oregon Utility Commission balked at purchasing the high-priced electricity, leaving the project without a guaranteed place to sell.
Principle Power did not respond to a request for comment.
