2 OSU students hospitalized with meningococcal disease

ALBANY, Ore. — Two Oregon State University students have been sickened with meningococcal disease.

The Albany Democrat-Herald reports that one student was hospitalized Sunday and another was admitted on Wednesday.

Health officials on Wednesday confirmed that the first student was infected with the B strain of meningococcal disease. The second student is being treated for an unidentified strain.

OSU officials say one student lives in a private residence and the other lives in a campus dorm.

Health officials say that though meningococcal disease is potentially deadly, it is not highly contagious. So far officials have contacted about 160 people who had contact with the students and have treated them with antibiotics.

An outbreak of meningococcal disease at the University of Oregon in 2015 sickened seven people and killed one student.
