Letter: Treat disorder to reduce obesity

By Bonnie Stone, Vancouver

It was disheartening to read the June 15 story that the “FDA OKs stomach drain as obesity treatment.” Obesity is a complicated and multifaceted disease, but overall it is an eating disorder.

The treatment involves many different approaches to help a person make healthier choices and positive behavior changes. The new surgical procedure is a tube implanted in the stomach with a port that one uses to drain recently eaten food into the toilet. This is not treatment to change behavior, but instead surgical bulimia. The “cure” is far worse than the eating disorder.
