Letter: Remove forced affiliation

By Judith Brown, Vancouver

Lest I be preaching to the choir, the last time I checked, the United States of America was a free country where citizens could make educated choices freely. But wait, seems that this is no longer true.

My freedom to make personal, private political choices is being denied or at least clouded and challenged by having to indicate my political preference on my presidential primary ballot in order for my vote to count. By committing to this directive, my mail box will be inundated with fliers containing political rhetoric filled with hollow promises, as well as pleas for financial support. My phone will be ringing off the hook, with reminders to vote for this candidate or that candidate. Need I be subjected to such abuse in this free country?

In retaliation, I will continue to vote for the candidate I deem most qualified to carry out the duties of the office for which they are campaigning, regardless of their political party affiliation. In doing so, I will regain my right to make my personal, and private, educated choices.

For now, I will step off my soap box and oil the wheels in readiness for my next opportunity to rant.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
