Mugging suspect appears in court

A Vancouver man who was stabbed while he allegedly tried to rob another man of his bicycle made a first appearance Friday in Clark County Superior Court.

Ronley Santer, 21, appeared on suspicion of first-degree robbery in connection with the alleged mugging Wednesday night at Evergreen Park. Two other suspects were not immediately located by Vancouver police.

Officers were called to the park at 2400 Rossiter Lane shortly after 10 p.m. for a report of a disturbance with a weapon. The victim, identified in court records as Colin Shanklin, told police that three males physically assaulted him and took his Giant Boulder SE brand mountain bike, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Shanklin said one of the men told him, “That’s a nice bike. Let me get it up off you.” That man then punched him in the face and pulled his bike away from him. Shanklin was knocked to the ground, he said, and the other two males started hitting and kicking him.

He pulled out a folding knife from his back pocket and began slashing at the attackers in self-defense, Shanklin said. They eventually got off of him and he ran away, according to court records.

Police located Santer nearby. He was suffering from a stab wound on his right leg. He admitted to being involved in the altercation with Shanklin but refused to identify the other males, court documents said.

On Friday, Judge Scott Collier appointed Santer an attorney and set his bail at $25,000.

Santer will be arraigned July 15.
