Letter: Holiday and political statements

By Joseph Markee, VANCOUVER
Published: July 8, 2016, 6:00am

On July 2, The Columbian carried two new items with the same theme on the Opinion page: “There’s still no smoking gun on Clinton, Benghazi,” written by columnist Dana Milbank, and a political cartoon, at the top of the same page. There’s no doubt that this was the main theme of the Opinion page for July 2, 2016.

And, yet, there is no mention anywhere of the alleged factor which generated the “smoking gun” political statement, which was so prominently displayed: The death of four Americans who died while on duty.

Our family was reared to honor the men and women who died while serving their country, on the July 4th holiday, not to use this special holiday for political gain.

Is it too much to ask our city to focus on the sacrifices made by our citizens, and to forgo “political statements,” at least on this one holiday weekend?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
