Riley Friauf’s career night keeps Skyview girls perfect

CAMAS — It was a career night for Riley Friauf. It was a huge quarter for Maddie Lord. And it was a key victory for the Skyview girls basketball team.

The Storm are the last unbeaten team in the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League after a 51-40 victory over Camas on Tuesday night.

Friauf made 9 of 11 shots and scored a career-best 22 points, and Lord scored eight of her 10 points in the final quarter.

The Skyview defense held Camas scoreless for the final 4 1/2 minutes.

“They’re our league rivals. It’s a little bit more special than the others, you know,” Friauf said. “I wanted to give everything I could on the court with no fear. I thought we played really really well as a team.”

Skyview (8-4, 4-0 GSHL) led after each quarter, while Camas (10-2, 4-1 GSHL) kept rallying to keep it close … until those final minutes.

Hannah Van Nortwick hit a 3-pointer to give Skyview a 44-37 lead with 4:50 in the game, then Emma Jones responded seconds later for Camas to make it 44-40.

Jones finished with seven points for Camas. Freshman Haley Hanson led the Papmermakers with 11 points.

That 3-pointer from Jones, though, would be the final points for Camas.

Lord, though, got in a groove in the fourth quarter.

“I was a little frustrated,” she acknowledged of her first three quarters of play.

“I just got frustrated and said, ‘Now it’s time to get some points on the board.’ It just came out of me,” Lord said.

Lord also had two blocked shots on one Camas possession in the fourth quarter.

The defensive effort, she said, was a team thing.

“It was our communication and just how hard we worked,” Lord said.

The strong work ethic was key to Friauf’s growth as a player, too, according to Skyview coach Jennifer Buscher. Friauf scored nine of her team’s first 11 points, had 15 at the half and finished with 22 on 9-of-11 shooting, including a 3-pointer, plus 3 for 3 at the line.

“She’s just a kid who put so much time in. Strength. Conditioning. Overall basketball,” Buscher said. “Countless hours working on her shot. Several of these kids have the potential to have these kinds of nights.”

Friauf also talks like a coach.

While beating Camas is special, as is taking over the top spot in the standings, she knows the Storm have not accomplished much this season. Not yet, anyway.

“We have to play every league game like it’s the state tournament,” Friauf said. “We have to play like we’re playing against the best team in the state every game. We come out with that mind-set.”

Buscher, in fact, said the victory means nothing more than Skyview improved to 4-0 in league play.

“We have a long way to go before this team reaches its goals,” she said. “We’re 4-and-0, and Camas is a good basketball team. That’s all it means.”
