Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is quoted as once saying, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’ ”
Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first observed as a federal holiday on Jan. 20, 1986. It’s observed on the third Monday of January every year and is seen as “a day on, not a day off.” That means, while schoolchildren and many workers get a three-day weekend, they’re encouraged to spend the extra day giving back to the community in some way to honor Luther’s legacy.
On Monday, there are several service opportunities for people in Vancouver. These activities are outside and require volunteers to wear clothing that’s appropriate for the weather and the work, including long pants and closed-toe shoes. All necessary tools will be provided at the volunteer sites.
