Sen. Rubio: Can’t ‘fix America’ from GOP-held House, Senate

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Sen. Marco Rubio says he’s missed votes in the Senate, but Congress can’t change much, anyway.

The GOP presidential candidate is telling a town hall meeting in Iowa: “We’re not going to fix America with senators and congressmen.”

Presidents, he said, set the public policy agenda.

The comments came in response to a question about the Republican presidential contender’s missed votes in recent years. Rubio said his voting record “is close to 90 percent” over his first and only term in the Senate. House members and senators, especially those on the campaign trail, routinely distance themselves from the unpopular Congress.

Rubio has said publicly that he’s frustrated by the legislature’s slow pace. He chose not to run for re-election as a senator from Florida as he pursues the presidency.
