COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will give the Republican response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address.

House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell jointly announced Tuesday that Haley will deliver the address following Obama’s Jan. 12 speech.

Haley says she’s honored she was asked to deliver it. She says the country has great challenges but also great opportunities, and she intends to talk about both.

The South Carolina-born daughter of Indian immigrants is the state’s first female and first minority governor. She is also the country’s youngest governor and was elected to a second term in November.

In a release, Ryan says Haley is the right choice to lay out a positive vision and alternative to the status quo.
