The superintendent of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site was honored this week in Washington, D.C., for her “exemplary management of resources” at the nationally significant urban park she oversees, according to a press release.

National Park Service Deputy Director Peggy O’Dell presented Superintendent Tracy Fortmann with the Appleman-Judd-Lewis Award for Cultural Resources Stewardship by a Superintendent. As part of the Tuesday ceremony, Fortmann, who has been superintendent since 2000, gave a presentation about Fort Vancouver and her work to the national directorate, the press release said.

The annual award is for employees of the National Park Service. It was created to encourage creativity in cultural resource stewardship and management practices and projects, especially those that could serve as examples for programs throughout the service.

Fort Vancouver officials said Fortmann led staff in expanding interpretive and educational programs and capitalizing on innovative media and partnerships. She also has been recognized for her efforts to build a meaningful relationship with the more than 30 American Indian Tribes that have a close connection with the site, the press release said.
