The Board of County Councilors proclaimed Feb. 21-27 as Invasive Species Awareness Week to bring attention to the threats non-native plants and animals pose to Clark County’s native environment.

The county urges people to stem the spread of invasive species by: cleaning hiking boots and outdoor gear before heading to another location; not dumping aquariums or live bait into waterways; not transporting firewood; using weed-free hay, mulch and soil; planting only noninvasive plants in your garden or on your property.

Volunteers also can attend two invasive weed pulling events. One is 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Salmon Creek area (email aking@clarkpud for details), and the other is 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 27 at Tenny Creek Park, 3100 91st St. (sign up at http://bit.ly/1Sw2K5r). Volunteers should register in advance and bring gloves and reusable mugs to the work site.
