Letter: Herrera Beutler fails constituents

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler doesn’t support the Healthy Families Act. If you are a constituent of hers, why should you be outraged?

• Herrera Beutler earns $174,000 per year in Congress.

• According to govtrack.us, since being in Congress she has missed 15.8 percent of her 3,991 roll call votes. The average is 2.3 percent missed votes for representatives currently serving. She has missed far more than any other representative from Washington.

• Herrera Beutler had very good reasons to be absent: her first child was born without kidneys and she had a second child. However, she does not support a bill that would give working Americans even a fraction of the same benefits she receives paid for by the American people.

• The Healthy Families Act would set a national standard for businesses (with 15-plus employees) to allow employees to earn up to seven paid sick days per year. Rep. Herrera Beutler won’t even support seven paid sick days so we can take care of our sick children and ourselves.

• 39 percent of the private workforce does not have paid sick days.

Why doesn’t Herrera Beutler support a national paid leave standard so we can all have just a scrap of what she does?
