Letter: Consider tunnel rather than bridge

By Del Allen, Washougal

The Interstate 5 Bridge continues to be a problem without a solution. Forget the bridge and build a pair of tunnels with the Portland entrance and exit in the triangle of North Denver Avenue, North Schmeer Road and the present I-5. Property is presently vacant. The Vancouver entrance could be adjacent to the present I-5 on the north side of East McLoughlin across from the present Marshall Community Center. That property is also vacant.

There would be no height problem for ships, it would look better than a bridge structure in the skyline and could have light rail accompany the tunnels. Leave the present I-5 bridge for local traffic with a load limit preventing trucks from using it. Both entrances are adjacent to the present I-5, so connections would be minimal.

The new plans for the Quay property could continue as planned. Problem solved.
