Weather snarls morning commute

Maybe the government was right this time. On the same week that a state report listed Vancouver as one of the worst spots for traffic, the morning commute was at a standstill today.

Traffic on Interstate 5 southbound was stop-and-go beyond Northeast 73rd Street through 8:30 a.m. That in turn slowed westbound traffic on Highway 500 and Highway 14.

Interstate 205 was an unappealing alternative, with heavy traffic slowing throughout the entire Clark County stretch of the highway.

A wreck on northbound I-5 on Portland’s Marquam Bridge had the unusual effect of slowing traffic into Clark County from Oregon.

The trouble was lubricated by about a tenth of an inch of rain that fell just before the heaviest commuting hours.

The National Weather Service says the rain will taper to showers later today, but heavy rain is forecast for the weekend.
