Skamania County sheriff’s deputies have suspended their search efforts for a missing man from Kentucky who was last seen in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest on Sept. 19.

Glenn “Austin” Oldfield, 39, last texted his girlfriend Sept. 17. Oldfield, who is from Louisville, Ky., was planning to spend two weeks camping in Southwest Washington, according to a sheriff’s news release.

Two days later, two hunters talked with him near Lone Butte, approximately 31 miles north of Carson. Oldfield told the hunters he was lost, but when they attempted to show him the way to the road, he turned and ran in the opposite direction.

Searchers later found his car and a campsite, but he was not there. Over the weekend, about 50 searchers combed the area, according to Sheriff Dave Brown.

Although the search is suspended, the sheriff’s office will continue to post missing person fliers in the area to alert hunters and other forest users of Oldfield’s disappearance.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Oldfield should call the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office at 509-427-9490.
