The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office has begun investigating the death of a man whose body was found Friday afternoon floating in the Willamette River between the Fremont and Broadway bridges, an agency spokesman said.

Nearby construction crews saw the body of a man and called for assistance around 2:45 p.m., Lt. Steve Alexander said. River patrol units and Portland Fire Bureau crews responded 10 minutes later and found the body midchannel, he said.

“Detectives and the medical examiner were notified and responded,” Alexander said. The sheriff’s office will handle the investigation and turn over the body to the Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office, he said.

The man’s identification should be released after his family is notified of the death.
